Evaluation of Effect of Essential oil Microemulsion of Some Species of Apiaceae Family on Root-knot Nematode Meloidogyne javanica

Root-knot nematodes cause significant damage to agricultural crops every year. The direct use of plant essential oils because of their small amount in the essential oil extraction process and their volatility, causes problems in bioassay studies. So, the use of different formulations such as microemulsions improves their usage. In the present study, the anti-nematode effect of essential oils of fennel, anise and ajowan was investigated against Meloidogyne javanica. After preparing the essential oils and microemulsions of the three tested plants and analyzing the available compounds, experiments were conducted on the mortality of second strage juveniles and the hatching of nematode eggs. In the pot experiment, various treatments were considered, including pots inoculated with nematodes, nematodes and microemulsions, and microemulsions alone. After two months, some plant growth factors and the number of knots and egg masses were recorded. Anise seeds had the highest essential oil content and anethole was the highest essential oil content of this plant with 92.6%. Anethole was the highest in fennel essential oil with 74.1%. Thymol was the highest in ajowan essential oil with 48.2%. The effect of microemulsion of plant essential oils on root-knot nematode egg hatching showed that especially high concentrations prevented nematode egg hatching and the effect in reducing egg hatching was greater in anise than in the other two plants. The results showed that especially high concentrations of microemulsion of all three plants caused mortality compared to the control and the effect in anise was less than in the other two plants. In cucumber roots, all three microemulsions reduced the number of nodes and egg sacs and the effect was greater in fennel. All three plants had inhibitory effects to some extent and in part of the nematode life cycle and are good candidates for biological control of root-knot nematode. Biological and natural pesticides are less harmful to the environment than chemical pesticides, so further studies are of particular importance for the possibility of commercializing these types of achievements.
